Got roommate's old monitor after he upgraded, which is still a huge improvement over my old one by at least 5 years. Hot damn resolution and color balancing are completely off on my old monitor, tonal shifts into white enter over exposure and the fade of borders are wonky beyond acceptability.

Lesson learned - when your monitor makes weird noises on startup and makes scanlines for 15 minutes until regulating, its time for a new monitor.
